Nobody really did. It's a film you say "Oh, wow, cool!", but it doesn't deserve to be seen a second time.
It's like the old "pioneering" films of things like trains pulling into stations and people walking down the street; yeah it's a technical achievement and all but once you get past the shinies, there's nothing new or especially interesting there.
Hell's bells, even Sky Captain was better.
