I'm going with the "monster"...we've seen a wide array of emotions in the dream. It sounds like a telepathic (analytical) alien trying to understand the humanoid mind.
Of course, if Kat's and Hilary's treatment of each other stems from envy of what each has (beauty, friends,etc.)then this kinda makes sense.
Like that episode of Ally McBeal, the two characters really hated each other out of envy, but...
