I'm going with the "monster"...we've seen a wide array of emotions in the dream. It sounds like a telepathic (analytical) alien trying to understand the humanoid mind.

Of course, if Kat's and Hilary's treatment of each other stems from envy of what each has (beauty, friends,etc.)then this kinda makes sense.

I'm betting it's a flashback mixed with the more fantastical elements.
