So that's where the rivalry came from. I actually feel sorry for Hilary now.

Oh my....! To see such a little girl with so much potential in society to do good would forever be changed into an stock-up, evil(yet sexy)woman all because of a pink pony lunchbox. And also to see such a innocent little cat-girl be bullied for many years to come for having the same lunchbox.

Oh, sure, Hilary can be absolutely rotten. The Post OP thing (even if it was a dream) is what I consider a "new low". But this comic right here? A small child being offended/hurt over something simple and petty? That's absolutely COMMON. Not particularly a "new low".

Now holding a grudge over that fact alone? Yeah, that's stupid.
But see, I think this is just the spark that started the fire. It's not just about the lunch box. Hilary's child mind perceived Kat as the enemy. The one that (in her mind) took away her chances of being awesome and well loved because she wasn't unique anymore. But when she bullied Kat for it, their personalities clashed, and when Hilary couldn't exterminate the "enemy" by being mean, she only got meaner and meaner in a desperate attempt to make sure that Kat was always worse off than her. It stopped being about a lunch box, and just turned into plain and simple hating for hating's sake.

Now that doesn't excuse Hilary for her past actions at all.
THIS comic shows something normal for a lot of kids. Except unlike a lot of kids, this was never resolved or dropped, and it only got worse as they got older, helping turn Hilary into the person she is now.
But I actually hope that there can be redemption or at least. But then again, I'm an optimist. XD

I'm reminded of Kat's dream-flashback in which Kat and Hilary showed up at the same place with exact same dress. From her dialogue, Hilary seemed to have been a lonely little girl who wanted people to like her and think she was special, but Kat kept inadvertently torpedoing that.

I think, contrary to the popular notion shown in webcomics, that people usually don't go into serious pornography because they're sex maniacs but because of the money. Acting is a lot harder than it looks, with multiple takes, makeup sessions, and the lot.

Hilary probably did the pornography to help make ends meet after she'd been kicked out on her own. Once she'd gotten on her feet financially, she was more than happy to put that part of her life behind her.

All jokes aside, I mentioned that Hilary seemed very concerned with her image & what others thought of her.

Now, assuming (justifiably) that "Ann Winters" is based on existing lingerie company "Ann Summers" (which also sells sex toys), you have to consider two things:
1-Despite being an "image conscious employer", they're not exactly prudish.
2-Porn is, more or less, mainstream & has been for quite some time.

So it stands to reason that it wasn't fear of reprimand from her boss, but Hilary's own shame that made the blackmail effective (kinda makes you look at the situation in a whole new light, don't it? Not that Art had much of a choice, but still...).

I think that it was Hilary's desperate desire to be "totally awesome" that got her into porn to begin with ("Hey, everyone seems to like me when I'm naked & doing lewd things." yeah, no sh*t) & when she realized it wasn't getting her the respect (love) she wanted, she got out & tried burying the past.

I don't think most girls do webcam porn because they think it's awesome, but more to get money. Some girls will diddle themselves on a webcam to pay their college education for example.

We don't know that yet. This could just be the begining.

The way I see it, JJ can play this out in one of two ways:
Either Hilary confronts Kat & it escalates to the point that both lunchboxes - & both girls feelings - are destroyed.
Or we see, over the next few strips, several more instances (possibly over the course of their first few years of knowing each other) of Kat inadvertently stealing Hilary's thunder.

Keep in mind that they're kids here. Things that we, as adults, view as silly can be the most important thing in the world to a child.
