You press the 'Insert an Image' button in the toolbar over the text entry box.

As for the strip? Personally, I'd follow the Khans at a discreet distance and let them get whittled down by the inevitable booby traps and other defences (c.f. wandering monsters). I'd only tackle them after they have reached the Prize and are wounded and weak.

Of course, it seems that our heroine has decided that she'd prefer to handle this issue immediately.

I tried that, but it kept showing up in the preview as a little black x, so I even couldn't tell if I was picking the right image from the source code.
