First blood pressure issues, now hearing problems... Is JJ projecting or is this the beginning of the next arc for Art?

Well, he did mention on Patreon that it's based on a True Story(TM)...

I think he just sneezed so hard that his hearing is off kilter for a while.

This one seems more probable*.

A friend of mine the other day went in to the Urgency Care Center because he'd lost all the hearing in his left ear. The nurse there looked in, went to get a syringe and a kidney bowl, and proceeded to rinse out his ear with warm water for the better part of fifteen minutes. Finally, all of a sudden, a lump of ear wax the size of a pencil eraser/rubber came out. Hearing problems all solved!

Can you blame them? Sure, the company wants to save a couple bucks by eliminating salaries, but considering the abuse frequently heaped upon phone receptionists, I doubt those receptionists will shed many tears about no longer having to interact with people over the phone. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

It ain't about abuse, it's about saving money.

Well, yes. For the corporation, that's all that matters. Nor was I taking anyone's side. Beancounters are so focused on the bottom line that they fail to see what makes that bottom line.

However, I was referring to the poor schmucks who used to have to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous customers back in the day. And yes, the corporation doesn't care about them either.

Agreed! And when it's not automation it's moving work to countries where it's cheaper. This is why on the rare occasions you do get to speak with a human being, you can't understand what the b****y Hell they're saying to you.

The company I work for moved a lot of our jobs to one of these countries a few years ago and it has been an utter disaster. Most of the remaining staff back here resigned to take jobs where they felt safer, and meanwhile the staff across the ocean don't have the language skill or the training to do the work. A member of my own team was forcibly transferred because management wanted him to train the overseas staff, but he was so overwhelmed by the demands that he too resigned. He hasn't been replaced. Sad
