Pip is going to impress Hillary with his courage and his daring saves because he thinks that it's just one of the Quinten Quads in a really good costume. He won't faint in terror until after he finds out that the monster was real.

Of course, Hilary sees through the charade from the get-go, being neither an idiot nor a shrinking violet, and is utterly unimpressed.

And then Hilary anticlimactically smacks down the monster to reveal... it's Squee having fun in a monster costume.  Pip ends up looking silly, Hilary gets her hands on Squee, we get to see Squee's take on the whole matter (does she like being part of Hilary or not?), and Jollyjack sniggers gleefully as he goes a totally different route for the whole scenario.
