1 Favourite or admired artists? on Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:40 am

Has this been done on the new look forum yet? If not, you know the drill: See an artist's work, like the artist's work and comment on who they are and why you like them/their work. Even provide a link if you like

I've found a new favourite artist today: Sean Murphy http://www.seangordonmurphy.com/
I picked up a copy of Batman: Twoface and Scarecrow: Year 1. His style graces the first set of stories in this collection (a few black and white scans of those pages are on his Batman art page). Then I noticed he also provided a Han Solo/Indy themed story for one of the Star Wars Tales volumes. His work is cartoony and aggressive and very recognisable.

My favorite artist is Brian Froud. He was the head of art design in The Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal and his wife was the original art designer of Yoda. He is one of the world's foremost authorities on Faeries and the mythology surrounding them. He wrote the books Faeires, Good Faeries-Bad Faeries, Goblins! Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells (which was written in partnership with Terry Gilliam), The Faerie's Oracle, and was the illustrator and co-writer of The Runes of Elfland. It was from one of his pieces that I got the design for my second tattoo, the Rust-Spot Faerie.

This is his painting of The Queen of the Unseelie Court:

This is some miscellanious faeries:

Nice stuff. I can see some Jim Henson styled imagery in the last one (the face behind the fairy at the back).

That's Brian's style, Henson liked it enough to hire him. His son was the baby in the Labyrinth. His name really is Toby. He's a stilt-walker now.
