A "not-so-guilty pleasure" of mine is voiceacting webcomic characters with friends. I have to admit, voicing through SA was a LOAD of fun, especially since everypne was pretty much spot on in my head.

Though it makes me think; and some point or another, the artist/writer/etc. has GOTTA imagine at least one of their characters' voices, right? And if not, no time like the present.

What more or less "known" voices do you tack onto the SA characters? Accent or otherwise? (Voices of other unrelated characters/voiceactors/etc. are sufficient.)

Personally, I hear Kat as a bit more mature sounding Blackrose (.hack//)
Scarlet, I hear it in my head, but can't think of an example to compare to. >_>

Another fitting one IMO for Kat is Yoko. (TTGL)

Nope.

Mr Bean, perhaps.

Oh. Oz is definitely a Hugh Laurie.

'Interesting. I've been thinking about an animated version of Sequential Art, but hadn't considered voices yet. I realize that JJ wants the setting to be "anywhere" rather than England, but somehow it seems appropriate to give most of the characters a light British accent. A quick search on voices.com for female cartoon voices with such an accent turned up Elizabeth Chatsworth. She might come up with a good voice for Scarlet, Kat, or one of the other female leads, but I'd have to search around quite a bit to find a promising voice for each major character. I'd avoid over-the-top standard anime voices. They can be good for broad action shows or comedy relief, but SA seems more subdued and cerebral to me, so I'd prefer more realistic voices.

For some reason I don't want to give Pip a British accent, but if the right actor comes along, the base accent wouldn't matter. In the spirit of making the location "anywhere", I wouldn't want a strong accent on any of the characters unless the accent was specifically a part of their persona (such as Crazy Sven, and perhaps the Denizens). Scarlet seems to be the toughest to me. I can't think of a good voice for her (other than my oldest daughter, who's a good match for the personality but doesn't have any experience with voice work).

Well...

I've tried to relate voices with shapes. Easy, natural and ... realistic.

At one point I suggested that Chloe could have a Rachel Weisz-like influence in her voice, which I think Jack liked (that was ages back though). Though I think she would have a more exotic accent considering she's probably lived elsewhere for a long while.

I didn't think about Jack to be honest. For a quick answer, I'd have to say Dee Bradley Baker. Something close to his Letz Shake voice in No More Heroes.

Art - Martin Freeman (The Office) = Yes, I agree. If his voice was a little lower it would be spot on.

Kat - Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: TNG) = No, It dose not really work for me... I imagine her with a more "Soprano" voice rather than an "Alto".

Pip - Hank Azaria (The Simpsons; Mystery Men) = NOOOOOOOOOOO! DEFIANTLY NOT!

Scarlet - Ikue Otani (Pikachu in the Pokémon animé) = Depends on how she talks and uses her voice... I will see if I can find my representation of Scarlet, later.

Hillary - Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives) = No...To high of a voice. I imagine her with the voice of Lust from FMA... but with a more active voice, rather than a flat tone.

Vanity - Kristin Kreuk (Smallville) = yes, Yes, YES! A THOUSAND TIMES, YES!! Perfect choice.

Aack -- there goes the budget! I'm serious about proposing an animated version of SA, so that list might be good for getting ideas, but not as a list of agents to start calling. Barring a deal with a major studio there's no way we'd be able to hire an all-star cast like that, though I'm hoping that we'll be able to afford at least a couple of experienced voice actors such as Richard Horvitz. Also, while I have a lot of respect for the work of folks like Teri Hatcher and Kristen Kreuk, I'd put less emphasis on experience playing roles of similar characters, and more emphasis on experience in voice-only acting.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice list for getting ideas. Thanks for posting it. It's just that I've been thinking about how big of an audience (and hence budget) we could hope to bring in with an SA-based animated product, so seeing a top-price name like Harry Shearer made me cringe. I completely agree with asking Mr. Jackson to voice the hamster, though I'm only planning on a brief cameo appearance by the little critter as an inside joke to fans of the comic strip. I'm considering asking Ellen McLain (the voice of GlaDOS) to pick a role, though if she asks for OzBASIC I'd want clearance from Valve on the matter. Among copyright lawyers here's a fine line between "homage" and "grounds for a lawsuit", and it will cost you at least $300 an hour just to ask them to explain where that line might be. It's cheaper to avoid the line completely by asking for permission in advance (ask Al Yankovic).

I haven't had much luck in coming up with a good voice for Scarlet, but I'm guessing that it's a problem which will solve itself. The character is so appealing that my plan is to simply collect a bunch of her best comics and letting a broad range of actresses know that the role is available to whoever sends us the best demo tape. We might even get some big-name actress to take the role if they're willing to do the job for a low up-front price. I would not, however, give all four squirrel girls to the same actress, as you suggested in your list. The other three squirrels would be consolation prizes to the actresses who didn't get Scarlet, and I'd prefer that the voices be very distinct, to help the audience know which of the four is speaking at a given time.

The biggest problem is Art. He's largely the straight man of the group, which is a much more difficult role than the over-the-top characters who more easily draw attention. The straight characters are critical. They provide contrast for the attention-drawing characters (e.g. they make a goofy character seem goofy by comparison to the straight). Perhaps more importantly, the straight often becomes the eyes of the audience -- which IMO is very much the case with Art. Art is the most subtle character, but he's the lead role, and I feel strongly that if we can't get the audience to connect with him and root for his success, then the rest of the story would largely fail. But which voice would best fit the role? I'm still stumped, but a good casting director can probably solve that problem, so I'm not too worried about it (yet).

Right now it's more important to get a marketable concept written up, create a plausible budget, try to convince JJ to get on board, and start looking for a backer. For what it's worth, so far I can't think of a good argument that this concept will have a broad enough appeal to get past the comic-store crowd (which is a good market, but too small for most animation projects). So at the moment it looks like this won't work out, but it's been fun to at least think about it for a while. I like the comic, I just wish there was a way to get an animated something-or-other (movie? tv series? animated web comic?) out of it.

Shouldn't the choice of SA being animated or not be up the JollyJack? Seeing how it's his story, he should do it however he damn well pleases.

Believe me, I admire the deep thought you've put into this, I really do.

Thing I might say is though, you might be getting a little ahead of yourself. Might I suggest starting small?

Why not try comic adaptations? Like those guys did for VGCats as seen here.

No joke, why not assemble some unheard amateurs, and pick out the Tier 3's and 4's of them. (Yes, that was a Little Victory Reference.) Really shows consideration for unheard talent. Work up from there.

To be frank, I'll even offer mine own. >_>

That's just my suggestion though. Less time and money consuming.

Of course. Look at what I wrote in the final paragraph: my next steps are to "get a marketable concept written up, create a plausible budget, try to convince JJ to get on board, and start looking for a backer". I haven't contacted Mr. Jackson because so far I don't have a convincing proposal to present. Obviously I'm not going to pitch to a studio without first getting the copyright holder on board.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know that. Come to think of it, Scarlet reminds me a lot of Leeloo. It might be fun to have Scarlet say something in Leeloo's language as an inside-joke reference to The Fifth Element.

FWIW, the success of machinima such as Red vs. Blue suggests that amateur groups can do decent voice acting.

However (and I think this is worth noting) the quality of RvB's voice work only really reached an acceptable standard after the team invested in a small professional-standard recording booth. Before then, the sound was recorded on a tape player wired up to an XBox's sound output port and sounds like a 'phone call in a low-service black-zone. There is really no way of getting around some minimum standards.
