I think that, in a way, Hilary regrets not realising that cosplay was the way to Pip's heart before this.
In answer to the question in the thread title, I think that we're getting a hint that both Pip and Hilary are using the other in different ways. It's a genuine mutually-disrespectful toxic relationship!
