Quite liking this. All flashback and all. All pre-coffee Vanity.

It could be a flashback. Or, alternately, it could be a hallucination brought across by the tentacle-thing's attack: Trap them both in a nightmare so they can't ever escape and threaten it again.

Have Kat and Vanity slipped into Silent Hill's Dark World?

BTW: That isn't Vanity in today's strip. It's an avatar for the monster. You'll notice pretty quickly how antagonistic she is to Kat, trying to keep her trapped in the scenario and trying to pull her down (weak self-esteem = reduced psychic strength). I confidently expect a demon!Vanity vs. real!Vanity cat-fight in the near future.

Also the avatar monster idea could explain a bit. Since it was Kat that got hit at the back of the head.

Could be like the Despair Squid from Red Dwarf. Big tentacle thing, shoots despair ink, which eventually causes a creature to kill themselves. Usually during an hallucination.

I think it's a flashback. Vanity was meant to have been like this before Kat introduced her to Mr Hardcore strength Coffee.

From the way Kat acted, I think she is aware something isn't quite right. Also, I think her memory is that of when she got knocked out.

I smell an agent implant. That entity must have slipped inside her mind and is using Vanity as an avatar of sorts to pry something loose.

Of what and why it wants it, is largely an unknown.

Maybe the monster sent her back to when everything that led up to that point took place (How Vanity gained her powers and how they ultimately found the mansion ) So she could create a time paradox so the encounter never happened...Or maybe it's just a flashback to a similar time that will remind Kat how to deal with the situation...*goes on forever about possibilities*

I'm sticking with Occam's Razor for now and assume it's a flashback for Kat, although possibly, just maybe, a lucid one. Until we get more information, we'd basically be growing epileptic trees in thin soil.

So most of us agree that it's a lucid dream.

Looks like we have to wait for the next strip to come out to see. Or maybe next few strips

Or maybe, maybe,
maybe JJ was going for a prophecy loop like in some horror movies.
He probably planned to include the morning scene before but worried it would give away the twist ending.
He might drop it and never reference it again, in which case I'm probably right.
