He's not wrong. Art isn't stupid and certainly capable of doing the necessary research, but he's also not a trained medical professional. Of course, a doctor isn't necessarily right either, but he'll have a better chance of figuring out what Art's got and how to treat it.
Ultimately, though, Art's health is Art's responsibility and only his responsibility, but he's wise enough to know when to consult someone who can help him maintain it.
