I've noticed that the forums notes there is a "bot". And I think that is what is highlighting some of the words in the forum when I visit. Why is it there anyway?

A "bot" from Google is an automated webssurfing app. It's following links and checking what pages go where as well as collecting specifics of what's on each page. That's how Google gets all its search information.
It's only here as a visitor, but the forum software recognizes what it is.
