It's all a matter of delivery. If someone were to throw a couple of objects at me and I caught them, only to find they were a pair of detached thumbs, I'd probably react the same way at first. I mean, EEEUW!

I would say it's the latter. Because the name itself comes from the fact that the character he is based on is called Mr. Tumnus.
