My dad and I just started up a game today. He and his brothers used to be really big into Risk decades ago but he also hasn't played it for about that long. This is my first time ever playing it. I'm really enjoying it so far, even though we've had to put the game on pause until tomorrow.

We're playing the standard two player game with non reinforcing neutral territories at the beginning. Things started out well for me when I took control of Australia, though he overtook me when he gained both Africa and North America. He then took South America, but lost his monopoly on North America when I took Alaska through Kamchatka.

As it stands now, he has a slight upper hand on me from controlling Africa, South America and most of North America. I have Australia and most of Asia. Europe is still heavily contested.

God that game is so good.

Although it is difficult finding an opponent around here. Only two have played me... one has beaten me... ( BY MAKING ME RETREAT TO THE UK?! I didn't even know it was possible) My good friend and my grandad. Most other people think it'll be boring, or not understand the rules.

Although there was that time when we had a heavily contested 4 player game going, and my 'unnoticed domination' strategy FAILED... I was all like NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Just curious... Do you have any effective strategies?

Well, as this is my first game I don't really have many strategies just yet. At the moment I'm trying to take and hold Asia while keeping his control of North America disrupted.

Here are some of the rules we agreed on for this game:

At the end of your turn you can only move armies from one territory you control to one other territory you control.

However, a few turns in we agreed to these rules as well:

When you take over a territory you can immediately move as many armies as you like into the territory from the territory you attacked from, the minimum amount being the number of armies you attacked with in the last battle. In addition, you can immediately attack another adjacent territory from the territory you just took.

Needless to say, after we agreed on those two rules almost all of our moves from that point have been sweeping slash attacks over several territories. It does seem a bit strange that we have more mobility when attacking than when not attacking, but it's fine because it makes the game interesting.

'Warfare comes in all forms from conventional, biological, chemical and all the way to nuclear. Neat little plastic mushroom clouds are included to show where regions of the earth have been blasted, and if nuclear winter occurs, all players lose.'

...plastic mushroom clouds. You can't get any more awesome than that. Gotta get meself a copy of this cos it sounds pretty damn good.

And you can cause nuclear winter. I don't need to say anything else...

I'd really like to try it. I keep meaning to talk to the guys I play D&D with (well, it started as D&D, but we started added some GURPS equipment, and rules into it, and now we just use GURPS rules completely.)

Well, our game only went on an hour and a half longer before he pulverized me. It just seems like once you have an upper hand it's likely to just keep getting bigger and bigger. Nonetheless I learned quite a bit about Risk tactics.

Now I need to see if I can get a decent sized multiplayer game going. That would be far more interesting.

Risk, D&D, all of these mentioned I have been meaning to get around to playing and never do! Dang!

I am pretty good at Infinite Chess, tho.

Well, now I am more motivated to go spend my money. Thanks a lot.
