1 Landscapes?! on Tue Jul 26, 2011 10:35 am

Hi there, my name's Jake.

I've been reading SA for a few years now, but I only discovered these forums very recently. Being an aspiring artist myself I thought I'd share a few of my own pictures.
I also noticed that the majority of people posting here seem to specialise in character drawings. Personally I enjoy environments more, and thought I could add a little variety to the place.

And maybe just one character design for good measure:

Critique/feedback definately welcome.

This is my first post/thread on the forum... so, try to be nice Smile

While this isn't really either critique or feedback, but I have this to say:

Dayum! O.O

Incredible, especially that last one. Only thing I have to say is that there is something about the one with the castle, I can't put my finger on it but something about it makes the castle look tiny, rather than distant. I think it's something to do with the boat's placement maybe? I dunno, just something makes it look like it isn't much bigger than the boat when I know it's just supposed to be really far away. I'm thinking it's something to do with the mountain, maybe the base isn't big enough in comparison to the top, something about it looks like a giant finger... Other than that hardly noticeable...whatever-it-is...I am VERY impressed. I couldn't do backgrounds of any kind to save my life.

Good observation. That's something I'd noticed, but hadn't gotten around to fixing. The piece originally didn't have a boat, but I added it in order to get a nice overlap with the shore and solidify the sence of space. It also makes a good secondary read. Of course the issue it introduced was that the ship was too large and too close to the castle to fit within the perspective.

My solution was to make the castle larger, and imply that the ship was bigger by changing it's design. I also moved it further from the castle.

Hopefully that's addressed the issue at least somewhat.

It's made a huge difference. I think my biggest problem looking at it was that just a plain old sailboat could not be that MASSIVE. But a full on ship? MUCH more believable! I really like your stuff, very good. I personally stick to character drawings because I'm just not imaginative enough for stuff like backgrounds. People keep telling me to add some to my drawings but when I do, I screw them up royally.

Those land scapes are intense, I realy like them alot. The character drawing isnt as impressive, but the landscapes are fantastic.

Fantabulous. I'm just going mad creating a whole storyline from the way order that you put them in.

What're you using to draw this, BTW?

If I'd were strictly talking about male things here then I'd say...

... you made my penis shrink into oblivion. Very Happy

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE WITH AN AWESOME LANDSCAPE ARTWORK LIKE THIS MAN?!?!

The only critique I could give to ya is about the size of the pictures. If you have them in 1280x wide or high resolution I'd gladly watch them.

Without any doubts you're the best fellow around with the grasp of coloring and lanscapes. As for the last guy, as you said, you're not good with characters, I'd agree to that.

But as far as your landscape goes... damn! I'd love to see high res art from you and I wouldn't mind having it as a wallpaper!

There's no way that you could draw it without studing some serious art colledge or courses, because your landscapes, it's shading and overalll "feel" are spot on!

Pietja, believe it or not, Art schools, design schools, anything relating to art and design DO NOT REQUIRE you to go to art school to get good, all they do is guide you. But everything you see in Art and Design is achievable on your own.

I'm jealous, I can barely write my own name.. <---

Seriously though, these are real pieces of art. These should be hung up on the walls of art galleries and have a price tag of mind-blowing proportions..
Have to go. I have to pick the pieces of my jaw off of the floor -->

Edit. Sorry about the extreme off-topicism but fixed the above text to be proper grammar and fixed (laughable) typos. (I can't believe that I get A's in English, is my english really that bad?)

Also, he/she is a teenager from Finland, I'm guessing English isn't their first language and that they spend a lot of time communicating via internet or text. There are a few people on this forum who are much worse. I happen to be a bit of a grammar nazi myself but given the situation I'm willing to let it slide. There is one person who no matter what I do I just can't understand a single word he says.

Being a grammar nazi especially on an art forum you post your artwork on is very...unadvisable.
