"New" to the forum, and because I didn't want to be known for the guy who only posted because of Kat pin-ups he can't find anywhere else, I thought I would say that I've immensely enjoyed the comic so far. The artist has a give for both storytelling and expressive characters. And, well, humor, which is getting harder to find in webcomics.

That said, even though it has kind of already been done in another thread, I thought I would officially start one on the subject. Here's what I'd really enjoy seeing as we move forward:

- I'd like to see an actual relationship develop between Art and Kat beyond friends/roommates. We've been teased at the prospect, and Kat apparently finds him attractive (and I don't even need to cite a comic example that shows Art finds Kat attractive... just pick one). The groundwork is there. I'd like to see it happen. Smile

- More little expressions of individuality from the squirrel girls. Scarlet is somewhat more distinctive, and Jade has had a bit of time, but the three recently-rescued squirrel girls are very difficult to tell apart personality-wise at the moment. Of course, it's perfectly sound for them to currently be that way, and I'm not complaining or anything, I'd just like to see them follow a nice progression towards finding themselves.

- Possible explanation as to why there are humans and animal people mixed in the SA world. Some comics make it seem common (Vanity being a successful author, other background characters distinctly shown with animal traits), while others seem to make it seem like seeing or hearing about animal girls is unusual as detailed in comics like these. Though there might not actually be a story reason for this, but if there is one... yeah.

- More Fern. Though I think this has already been hinted to.

Comments? Your own list?

Well, I haven't read all the threads here, so I might have missed allusions or "word of god" to the above things by JJ. And on the other side of things, I'm not some kind of mole or anything designed to hint towards things the Artist is planning.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. >_>

Nope, sorry, never heard of you until yesterday, and I have a habit of arbitrarily shortening longish Internet names... though why in this case I couldn't type what amounted to four more letters is a mystery to even me. The only answer I can come up with is that the Internet makes us all lazy!

I don't think that Violet, Amber and Jade were ever intended to be anything other than Scarlet's 'Backing Group'. That said, together they are formidable (witness the whacking they gave Pip in the LoL boardgame).

Like Zorph, I'd like to see the girls have their own individuality. Maybe they start to like different sorts of clothes (one wears cut-off jeans, one likes sarongs and tank-tops, etc). It would also be intersting if they get onto the Internet and find pen-pals.

ART: Yes... Can I help you?

A nerdy guy is standing at the door with flowers.

GUY: Um... I'm Jade's date?

Of course, I'm still holding out for the girls to have their own versions of the Steel Squirrel armour and for all four to go out causing well-intentioned havoc across the land (think Justice League with squirrel-anthros in bizarro-world Iron Man armour rip-offs).

- Possible explanation as to why there are humans and animal people mixed in the SA world. Some comics make it seem common (Vanity being a successful author, other background characters distinctly shown with animal traits), while others seem to make it seem like seeing or hearing about animal girls is unusual

I'm betting that Quinten Labs (or their spiritual predecessors) have a lot to answer for. Or is it another effect from the Wold-Newton meteorite? Boy, have I outed myself as a nerd now! Very Happy

Certainly, Kat, Vanity, Hillary and Scarlet don't get mobbed so, whilst anthros are unusual, they aren't particularly rare. If Kat and Hillary's school class was anything to go by, then they could be as common as 1-in-15 of the population (say, around 7%). If the sketches are official, with Hillary having a wolf-anthro boyfriend and Kat's dad being a cat-anthro too, there are both male and females around and they breed true.

- More Fern. Though I think this has already been hinted to.
Agreed. Vanity should not be the only 'token sane person' in the story.

I agree with all the above. As for the expliation of anthros, the SA Wild Mass Guessing entry on TVTropes states this:
Art imagines his friend's anthropomorphism.
He's been shown to have a fragile psyche under pressure and his mind has imprinted animal characteristics on the those he cares for. Hence why no one believes him when he cries for help due to his reporting that the world is filled with anthro animals, because we're only seeing the world from his perspective.

>This makes Scarlet either far more pitiable or far more awesome.

>>Jossed, Word Of God claims that Art imagines the human elements in his animal friends

>>Why then are they still anthropomorphic when Art isn't around?

>>A Wizard Did It.
I really hope that whoever claimed Word of God is just screwing with us. Actually, I dont really agree with any of that, just sharing informaton, do with it what you will.

See, that kind of falls apart, anyway, with this comic: In the first panel, why would Art imagine a random person in line being a rabbit when in all likelihood he has only seen the 'person' standing in line and has no basis for the assignment? In the second panel, Why would someone Art has never met in a mall be a catperson?

This comic also provides support for their basis in reality: How would a kid be able to hug Scarlet's tale if it wasn't real?

EDIT: And another thing I thought of. Using the example I posted of Pip acting as if Catgirls and Squirrel Ladies were unusual, why would PIP refer to the girls as such if it was all in Art's head? You might say Art told him about it, but then in that case, it wouldn't be an issue when he called the police, now, would it?

My thoughts on the points:

- I'd like to see an actual relationship develop between Art and Kat beyond friends/roommates.
I'd like their relationship to stay teasing, at least for the readers. Certainly it can develop, but I hope not too quickly and not too far, as that keeps the sexual tension up enough to keep that aspect of the comic interesting.

I also find it tiring to see so many characters get into romances. Where are those who don't want relationships and are not treated as pariahs because of this?

- More little expressions of individuality from the squirrel girls.
I agree. No matter how similar three people are, they'll have their own quirks. Of course, the squirrel girls need not have those quirks shoved in our faces. I'm sure Jolly Jack is crafty enough to work them in subtly, perhaps engendering discussion for threads to come as we argue if Amber picked up the wrestling magazine by accident or if she just likes to look at pictures of weird costumes.

- Possible explanation as to why there are humans and animal people mixed in the SA world.
I think this thought need not be addressed directly, if at all. Sometimes, it's best for believability if "it just is".

Still, I'm not a fan of "it's all in Art's head". I'd rather it be an alternate version of Earth, like Duckburg and its dog-nosed and ducky citizens exist on an alternate Earth.

- More Fern. Though I think this has already been hinted to.
I'm not a big fan of romances, but I think Fern meeting Pip could be a comedy gold mine, especially if they actually like each other. The ever-suave Pip suddenly finds himself way out of his league. After all, many of us never imagined just how clueless we turned out to be on our first dates (assuming we've had one yet) despite all our fantasies otherwise.

Normally, I would accept that explanation as well, 'it just is' except the comic calls attention to it itself... so that makes one wonder.

Kind of like how it would be like if a duck in the Duck Tales show said he wanted to do something, and then his snarky companion said, "HELLOOOOOOOOO.... WE'RE DUCKS! WE CAN'T DO THAT!"

14Hopes for the Future Empty The Sequential Art Heroes Wed Jan 13, 2010 2:04 pm

Proposal: The Sequential Art Heroes

Doesn't have to be 'mainstream'. It could be a series of sketches or an alternate universe picture.

Oddly enough, I was inspired long before the 'Steel Squirrels' by Art trying to survive a snowball barrage in his police surplus riot armour and Kat's 'Self-Insert' as a character from Street Fighter. Given the strange stuff that keeps happening to them, maybe Art and friends would decide to go proactive and be ready to fight Them before they come knock-knock-knocking on the door (c.f.: Jack & OzBASIC, Martians, Ultra-Bug).

CORE GROUP
Art - Vigilante - Using that armour plus either nightsticks or some other forms of coshes. You don't need much skill for that, just keep whacking 'em 'till they drop;
Kat - Feral - Agile, stealthy, all claws, fists and feet. Naturally an implausibly tight and revealing costume;
Pip - Seer - The Voice With An Internet Connection, our heroes' base controller. Let's face it, James Bond fantasies aside, he's more of an intellectual than a fighter. A combination of Oracle and Professor X - The guy who finds the bad guys and comes up with the plan and, on occasion, sources rare or unexpected things from eBuy;
Scarlet - Red Squirrel - Steel Squirrel with various fire/incineration weapons including a cool sword;
Amber - Yellow Squirrel - Steel Squirrel with lots of electrostatic-based weapons (inspired by a comment Kat made about amber holding static electricity) including a twin-ended spear;
Jade - Green Squirrel - Steel Squirrel with lots of water/cryogenic-based weapons including a trident;
Violet - Purple Squirrel - Steel Squirrel with lots of air/ground displacement weapons including a twin-bladed hand axe.

VILLAINS
Jack (The Dark Shade) - Mastermind-level villain like Dr. Doom;
OzBasic and the Turrets - Steel Squirrels' arch-foe;
Martians;
The Boris Clan (organised crime);
The Arttown Kids (irritant-level street gang);
Hillary (Bronze Bunny; infamous thief and con-artist) - Kat's arch-foe.

OCCASIONAL GUEST STARS
Vanity - Mysteria - High-end psychic (telepath, empath, telekinetic, pyrokinetic and precognative). Mostly involved in a 'Ghost Whisperer'-style quest to allow the recently passed to find 'peace' but occasionally helps out our friends. Also knows a lot of magic. Vamp/gothic costume;
Fern - Heavenly Sword - Sword mistress and a brilliant unarmed combatant too. Has paired katana with a curse on them forcing her to fight the denzeins of chaos wherever she goes. Think of her as Buffy with Gazelle horns and cool swords (that can cut through just about anything). Knows some magic. Cannot believe that her boyfriend Pip could possibly be a Hero.

Quoth Zorpheus:

Oddly enough, Carl Barks (whose comic stories inspired DuckTales) did something in that vein in "The Road to El Dorado" (I think that was the story's name) even though he otherwise stayed in the "it just is" concept.

In short, while warily exploring the temple of the Golden Man and keeping an eye out for hostile natives, Donald and the nephews run across a trophy room. There, one of the nephews states the ducks should be careful while pointing out some stuffed, non-anthropomorphic mallards. When I first read it, it seemed a little jarring to me, as if a bunch of human explorers was telling themselves to be cautious while pointing out some stuffed apes. I guess some gags fly better than others.

In another sense, I see your example as something two people in a real ethnic group might say. "HELLOOO! We're [ethnic group]! We can't do that!" Depending on context, it could be racist or comic emphasis. Using ducks or squirrels instead of a real ethnic group helps sidestep the racist possibility.

Quoth 26_994:
Nothing wrong if you love a furry character...but only if you can ... interpretate her/him to normal human look.But if you can't - you're yiffy zoophil then.
Not necessarily. Strictly speaking, a zoophile refers to someone who "summons storks" with a regular, non-anthropomorphic animal.

In my opinion, getting intimate with furries (in the sense of anthropomorphic characters like Kat, Scarlet, and Pip) would be similar to romancing a Vulcan or a Tolkien elf. This would be more like xenophilia (literally, "alien-lover"; I use it here to refer to one who loves a sentient non-human) than zoophilia. The difference is that the furry characters resemble real world animals (with whom sexual relationships are considered a no-no) while the Vulcan and elf resemble humans (with whom sexual relationships are okay), so the misconception (as I see it) is understandable.

In an open, tolerant society, I think xenophilia would be acceptable as both parties can (theoretically) make responsible decisions and communicate on the same level with each other. Of course, real humans have a long history of doing unfortunate things to those who dare mate with other humans outside their ethnic group. If a relationship between Art and Kat is accepted in their world, this could mean that humans and their anthropomorphic pals have been interacting on an equal level for a long time. (And I blasted well hope it's not because Art's delusional. tongue )

_____________________

Here's a thought: if Sequential Art really does end up being a delusion of one of the characters (I hope not, though), does it have to be Art who's wonky? Perhaps Kat is fantasizing herself as a cat or maybe Leonard was imagining the others until he self-inserted himself as a (sort of) regular platypus?

I don't think it would be that simple, though. Thanks to differences in genetics and biology, humans wouldn't be able to interbreed with bog-standard animals without some sort of genetic manipulation beyond our present understanding and/or abilities.

Of course, that didn't stop our ancestors from believing that humans and animals could interbreed anyway. Who knows? Perhaps, in the Sequential Art world, they were right!
