Fun fact: The gas inlet to the cooker is still a manual valve. It doesn't matter if the ignition is shorting all over the place because there is a physical control that must be twisted to let gas into the system.

No, as Art has found out to his cost, the worst that can happen is that a circuit breaker trips. If that doesn't happen quick enough for you, you can follow his example and trigger an overload by rapidly cycling the isolator switch.

I wonder if they'll need Crazy Boris to rewire the kitchen to fix this mess?

This has never happened to me. My old oven/hob (which I had until I moved house) was only connected to the gas and not the power. To ignite, you had to turn a knob to put the gas through and press a button that sparked a flint under all the hob burners.

My family used to have a gas stove, and I'm not sure how it originally worked, but for quite a while we had to ignite it manually (as in, turn on the gas and light it with a match).

This is why I like having an electric stove, I never have to worry about explosions.

I have an electric stove too, but my flat is in a building that was build way back in the time of the Kaiser. I have gas ovens for heating. These things are scary, tedious and expensive due to the high gas consumption. There are gas pipes which are probably 100 years old openly installed in every room of my flat. Every fall the ovens are a b*tch to get fired up. On the pro side, the room is warm as soon as you crank them up.

Fun fact: I almost ruined my Czech stove ("Mora" brand) that had fully plastic switches by wiping them too hard. 3 of 4 knobs were broken and I had to disassemble another stove to get the knobs I needed.
